Job Description
Direct Counsel is seeking an experienced Land Use & Environmental Of Counsel to join the sophisticated Land Use and Environmental Practice Group of a highly regarded California law firm.
This opportunity offers the chance to work on complex, high-profile public and private development projects throughout California. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in California land use law, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), regulatory permitting, and land use litigation.
The successful candidate will play a significant role in advising clients on complex development matters, navigating regulatory challenges, and handling sophisticated land use and environmental litigation.
Key ResponsibilitiesProvide strategic legal counsel to public and private clients on complex land use, environmental, and development matters.
Advise clients on CEQA compliance, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory review processes.
Manage complex land use entitlements, permitting, zoning, and development approvals.
Represent clients in land use and CEQA litigation, including developing litigation strategies, drafting substantive motions and briefs, and managing matters through resolution.
Counsel clients on California planning and zoning laws, local ordinances, and applicable state regulations.
Navigate local and state agency approval processes and address regulatory challenges.
Conduct sophisticated legal research and prepare comprehensive legal analyses and recommendations.
Independently manage complex matters while maintaining strong client relationships.
Collaborate with attorneys, consultants, government agencies, and other stakeholders to advance client objectives.
7+ years of substantive experience practicing California land use and environmental law.
Extensive knowledge of CEQA, California land use regulations, planning, and zoning laws.
Significant land use litigation experience is required, including experience handling CEQA-related disputes.
Demonstrated experience with land use entitlements, regulatory permitting, environmental review, and development approvals.
Strong litigation capabilities, including exceptional legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
Proven ability to independently manage sophisticated legal matters and competing deadlines.
Excellent strategic judgment, communication, and client relationship management skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary legal team.
Experience representing public agencies, municipalities, and/or private developers is highly desirable.
Active membership in the California State Bar.
Annual Salary: $250,000–$340,000
