Job Description

Human Resources Intern

At Maryland Wellness, we foster hope, dignity, and growth by providing compassionate behavioral health and wellness services and the skills needed to strengthen lives, relationships, and communities. Our vision is a Maryland where every individual has access to behavioral health and wellness support that empowers them to heal, grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.

At our Cumberland location, we are committed to serving a community that deserves consistent, compassionate, and clinically strong care. We are looking for a provider who shares that commitment and is ready to show up for clients at every stage of their recovery journey. Our team is guided by values of Compassion, Commitment, Respect, Collaboration, Transparency, and Innovation — and we extend those same values inward, fostering a supportive workplace where staff feel valued, resourced, and able to do their best work.

The Human Resources Intern gets hands on experience across nearly every corner of HR, recruitment, employee engagement, and HR systems, while directly supporting the daily operations of the HR department. This is not a shadowing only role. The intern takes real ownership of recruiting coordination, onboarding activities, documentation, and internal departmental processes while learning best practices in human resources within the behavioral health field. Along the way, the intern gains practical exposure to HRIS systems, employee relations processes, and HR administrative functions, and helps drive departmental initiatives and projects from idea to completion. Please note, this is an unpaid internship that grants course credits for various Universities and Programs.

  • Assist with recruitment activities, including reviewing applications and helping determine which candidates advance in the interview process, coordinating interview scheduling, and communicating with candidates throughout the hiring process.
  • Shadow and conduct phone screening interviews, and document hiring recommendations.
  • Support onboarding by preparing hiring documentation, assisting with new hire orientation, and supporting onboarding activities for interns and new hires.
  • Track and monitor performance review timelines, sending monthly reminders on overdue and upcoming reviews.
  • Assist with development and implementation of HR processes and resources, including forms, SOPs, and supervisor facing materials, such as a life event request form and a workers compensation one pager.
  • Support research, coordination, and implementation of employee programs and benefits that enhance the overall employee experience, including identifying and helping stand up new discount and benefit retail partnerships.
  • Coordinate and support planning of employee events, including logistics, scheduling, and communication with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Assist with employee recognition programs, including coordinating and distributing appreciation gifts for birthdays and life events, and creating celebration e-cards and supporting SOPs.
  • Create and distribute internal HR communications, including monthly holiday and birthday flyers, announcements, informational flyers, and digital e-cards.
  • Support completion of HRSA applications and related documentation, along with specialized forms such as the Health Insurance Premium Payment Agreement and Invoice Form for employees on unpaid leave of absence.
  • Participate in weekly HR team meetings, trainings, and the organization's monthly all staff meeting.
  • Partner with our Paylocity representative to explore tools such as Engagement and Pulse surveys, contributing ideas that strengthen employee voice across the organization.
  • Contribute to special HR initiatives and departmental projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
